Calligraphy and book sewing workshops
The Handmade Paper Manufactory in Kobyłka invites everyone to workshops on calligraphy, illumination, and bookbinding.
Thanks to these workshops, you’ll discover that by practicing and understanding the basic principles of calligraphy, you can write beautifully. You’ll learn about old typefaces, make your own ink, and try writing with a nib, a sharpened stick, and a quill pen.
You’ll be able to decorate a piece of paper, which we’ll then sew into a shared book.
You’ll learn to sew your own notes into colorful notebooks using old-school techniques passed down from experienced bookbinders.
Workshop Procedure:
- Slideshow presentation – you will learn about the history of book calligraphy, illumination, and old manuscripts.
- Inkjet Ink – you will try to create your own vegetable ink.
- You will assemble and design your own notebook from various sheets of handmade paper. You will sew it according to old bookbinding principles, using colored linen thread. This skill can be useful for quickly sewing your own notes and creating your own notebooks.
- During the calligraphy lesson, you will try your hand at writing with a nib, a quill pen, and a specially sharpened stick. We will distribute rulers and sample typefaces. Following the examples, you will be able to calligraph a label for your own unique, sewn notebook.
- We will also introduce you to the bookbinding awl, which was used to sew books in the past. You will learn about the construction of a book.
The workshops are held in two locations: the Handmade Paper Factory in Kobyłka and the Papierówka Museum in Warsaw’s Old Town.
