A series of creative workshops – calligraphy and book sewing

The Handmade Paper Manufactory in Warsaw invites you to a series of calligraphy and book sewing workshops.

If you’re looking to begin your calligraphy adventure, this series of workshops is for you!

Under the guidance of an experienced calligrapher, you’ll have the opportunity to practice your calligraphic skills.

In individual classes, you’ll not only learn to write beautifully, but you’ll also learn how to make your own plant ink and sew your own book on a bookbinding loom. These workshops will show you that knowing the basic principles of calligraphy can help you write beautifully. You’ll learn about old typefaces, make your own ink, and try writing with a nib, a glass pen, and a quill pen.

You’ll also learn how to sew a unique, artistic book, which can be a beautiful gift or a skill that allows you to create your own diaries, books, or novels illustrated with your own drawings and calligraphed sentences. Truly works of art!

  • You will decorate a sheet of paper, which we will then sew into a shared book.
  • You will learn how to decorate medieval manuscripts – you will try to create your own medieval illumination.
  • You will learn how to sew your own notes with linen thread into colorful notebooks, following old techniques passed down from experienced bookbinders.

The 12-workshop series includes:

  1. Multimedia lecture – you will learn about the history of calligraphy, books, illuminations, and old manuscripts.
  2. Inkjet Ink – you will try making your own ink.
  3. Calligraphy workshops with an experienced calligrapher.
  4. Workshops on sewing a book on a bookbinding loom.
  5. You will create your own notebook according to old bookbinding principles, which can be useful in the modern world for quickly binding your own notes.
